Overview

VR Mech Wars is a virtual reality exergame that combines immersive VR gameplay with real physical movement using an omni-directional treadmill. The project was featured in a university-published article and video, and presented at two national and international conferences (GET 2024 in Budapest and NCUR 2025 in Pittsburgh). Developed in Unreal Engine 5.2, it includes original gameplay systems, research-backed design, and was created across two separate teams of students, both of which I led.

Responsibilities

As the project lead, I was responsible for the core development and design of the game while managing a team of fellow students. I assigned roles, provided guidance and technical support, and often taught team members tools or concepts they were unfamiliar with. I balanced hands-on development, research, and the use of cutting-edge VR technology—all while managing weekly deadlines alongside a full academic course load.

We utilized Unreal Engine 5.2 and its visual scripting to design and program core gameplay systems, continuously iterating to find mechanics that balanced our idea of fun and fitness. I also integrated the Infinadeck omni-directional treadmill using a sparsely documented API, working alongside it to ensure an immersive experience.
